I know I’ve been promising for a while to post the recipe for the yummy chai we have after kirtan and after being reminded last night as my lovely Bhakti tribe tucked in, here it is…..
This is the perfect winter comfort drink, best had in an enormous mug that you can “hug”, my favourite are from Anthropologie , It also fills the downstairs with warming scents of cinnamon, ginger, cardamon and nutmeg. I love my morning cup of coffee, which is a whole ritual and indulgence of my senses in its making and consumption!! but one cup a day for me is definitely enough. Although I usually have a cup of herbal tea on the go at all times…doesn’t everyone have a huge tea drawer?? sometimes it doesn’t quite hit the spot. This usually means either chai latte or Tumeric latte, check it out here. For days when I feel in need of a bit of a boost, I will use black tea otherwise roiboos either plain or vanilla.
The basic recipe is just ground spices that I mix together and leave in a small kilner jar. You then have a choice of milk, since we are a dairy free household, I find oat milk is super yummy as it’s very creamy in texture, but check out different plant based milks to find your favourite. Add a teabag per cup to the milk and 1/2 teaspoon of chai mixture, bring to simmer in small saucepan for a few minutes. Decant and set up a space to sit…looking out at nature, a vase of flowers or painting. Give yourself time to sit, smell, taste….feel the mug in your hands. The Kirtan in the ForestKirtan in the Forest recipe has a little bit more flair, since it’s a special evening of love, devotion and coming together. It’s my way of an offering to my kirtan community after we have weaved our voices into a tapestry of the heart. I use the basic recipe then get creative with adding some whole spices into a little muslin spice bag (or you can just fish them out before serving). I use; cinnamon sticks, whole green pepper corns, star anise, cardamon pods and whole cloves.
Basic Chai Recipe
3 tsp Ginger
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp ground Pepper
1/4 tsp ground Nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground Clove
1/2 tsp Cardamon
3 tsp Garam Masala
